Life Skills/Carpentry

10th grade Main Lesson Block

Instructor: John Karlstad

In our life skills/carpentry class we began by designing a shelving unit for the print making room. We measured the space in the room and then put our design on paper. We walked to the lumber yard for a tour and to buy all of our supplies and to carry them back to the school. We then measured and squared and used hand saws to cut all of our pieces. We then nailed and screwed and glued our shelving unit together. We then installed the shelving unit by screwing it to the wall in the print room.

We became aware of a problem in the mop closet and took time to measure the closet and had a homework assignment of drawing some solution to the problem.

The last week of class was spent on our final project of completing a dovetail box. Each student was given two five inch pieces of maple and two ten inch pieces of cherry to make a box. Some of the boxes turned out a bit smaller as the week went on, however all of the students completed a box, and I enjoyed all of their smiling faces.

Your carpenter, John.
