Playing with your food is very successful. There were lots of awes and guffaws between gulps of food when the drama students presented their monologues and skits at the playful dinner theatre Nov. 18. A fantastic evening was had by all as the student lounge was transformed by light, stage and tablecloth into an intimate performing space - thanks to Chris Cox, John Tully and Liz Cox for the beautiful makeover! Chef Frank Wildingway and his assistant Faith Anacker produced a beautiful meal, beautifully served by a bevy of last minute waiters - who showed up to help and helpfully showed up the waitressing talents of any restaurant in town. The professional kitchen machine was also helped by Jan, Sally, Mike and Joann, who attended to all details and dishes. It was poetry. And the drama was the best! The students did a fantastic job yelling, screaming, moaning, whining, writhing in pain, spacing out, singing, preaching, cheerleading, and mostly acting very, very funny. It was an excellent job not to be missed. But if you did miss this uproarious event - pieces of it will be performed at the Driftless Cafe in December, so watch for details. As a parent fundraiser this event was very successful, bringing in over $1,000, and should be planned again for next year. But as a parent fundraiser it should be noted that it could not have been done without the students, who helped tote dishes, clean, move furniture, wait tables and act. On the other hand it should be noted that the students wouldn't be here without the parents who help support almost everything the students do … so let's just say we all worked together on a great fundraiser to support a great school. A school that knows food and how to play with it. —K O'Brien, director of Playing with Your Food
Thank you. Suddenly I can see all the costumes. Thank you Jake Forkash for installing a light fixture, light switch and outlets in the YIHS costume room.
Parent Help Needed. 2006 annual appeal letter will be processed on Tuesday December 05, 2006 from 2:00 PM until done. Folding, stuffing envelopes, inserting small envelopes, sorting and closing envelopes are some of the tasks we need to accomplish.
Credit Card rebates can benefit YIHS. Several companies offer credit card rebates that can be directed to your favorite charitable organization: If you use a “Kwik Card” credit card from Kwik Trip, you can designate YIHS as the recipient of your 3% “Kwik Rewards” rebate on gas and in-store purchases. If you already use a Kwik Card, call 1-800-305-6666 to add the YIHS as your rebate recipient. If you’d like to apply for a Kwik Card, ask for an application at any Kwik Trip. As soon as we have 5 cardholders directing their rebates to YIHS, Kwik Trip will begin sending quarterly rebate checks. Please pass this information along to your extended family members in the area. Target issues its own “redcard” credit card and will donate 1% of purchases made at Target, as well as ½% of purchases made at other stores, to a not-for-profit of the cardholder’s choice. You can designate the Youth Initiative as the recipient of your rebate by going to www.target.com and clicking first on the “redcard” link, then the link called “Take Charge of Education”. The Target school ID number for YIHS is 124508. Office Depot purchases can add up too! To direct Office Depot (5% to Education Program) to YIHS, mention YIHS ID #701 21 721 at check-out or when purchasing online. There are undoubtedly other rebate/donation possibilities. If you are aware of something for which YIHS is eligible, please contact Liz, 637-3915, liz@yihs.net.
Inside Wisconsin Sports magazine is once again proud to sponsor a writing contest among high school students in our State. We would like to invite students in your school to submit a written essay to us for possible publication in our magazine. The chosen winner will receive four Milwaukee Bucks tickets, valued at $380. Students should ensure that the topic, tone and style of their essays are suitable for publication in a sports magazine. In order to be considered for publication and the winning prize, we must receive the entries no later than December 8, 2006. Entries may be sent to me via email or mailed to: Inside Wisconsin Sports, Attn: Amanda Cook, 2901 International Lane, Ste. 100, Madison, WI 53704. Volunteer Opportunity. Looking for a way to give back this holiday season? Why not volunteer at the Habitat ReStore? Volunteering at the Habitat ReStore is a great way to support the community and help a great cause. The Habitat ReStore is a part of Habitat for Humanity. The ReStore sells donated new and used building materials to the public at discount prices – and all of the proceeds go directly to Habitat for Humanity to build more homes. As a ReStore volunteer you could help customers find the items they need, work as a cashier, price and shelve items to be sold, pick up donations, or do other jobs to help the ReStore. The primary mission of the Habitat ReStore is to support Habitat for Humanity through providing building materials and monetary support. The ReStore also seeks to give back to the community by providing building materials at low cost, with prices at 50% to 75% off the retail price, so community members can do home repairs and renovations at low cost. The ReStore also strives to help the environment by keeping gently used items out of the landfill, and to provide people with a way to recycle and reuse building and home supplies that may otherwise have been thrown away. The Habitat ReStore only accepts donations that are reusable and that can be resold. Items carried by the ReStore include: cabinets and countertops, hardware and tools, electrical and plumbing materials, furniture and flooring, and much more. Donations can be picked up by the ReStore staff or dropped off at the ReStore, and all donors receive a receipt that can be used for a tax deduction. The ReStore is open on Thursday from Noon to 8 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and is located at the corner of 3rd and Cass streets. Volunteers are asked to commit to three to four hour shifts, but other options are available. Visit our website at www.habitatlacrosse.org/restore for more information, or call (608) 785-2375 to set up an interview to become a Habitat ReStore volunteer!
Dear friends, first of all I would like to mention that we will have stalls at both the Pleasant Ridge and the Three Rivers holiday fairs: we will be raising funds for the Christian Community in Viroqua by selling wooden toys and crafts from Community Homestead (a lifesharing community in Osceola, WI), sets of Madonna cards as well as posters, and Christian Community/anthroposophical books from SteinerBooks. Many thanks to Marjorie Rehbach and David and Elise Kennedy for letting us squeeze in on their stall at Pleasant Ridge! Speaking of fundraising, some time in December you will likely receive the Christian Community in Viroqua's 2007 budget together with an appeal letter. To maintain and develop the activities of the Christian Community in the Viroqua area (including but not limited to the twice yearly visits of Reverend Richard Dancey from Chicago) definitely requires financial support! We had intended to send out this appeal in the weeks after Richard's visit a month ago, but we have in part been waiting for authorization from the Christian Community in Chicago (which we are legally a part of) to open a bank account in Viroqua. This authorization should be coming this week. The schedule for Advent was published in our Fall program but has been amended (and there may be further changes). Sunday 3rd December (Advent Sunday): the conversation circle will be replaced by a steering group meeting (which are now planned for the first Sunday of each month). Sunday 10th December (2nd Advent Sunday): the Fall program says that we are having a morning conversation (on the first December chapter of Adam Bittleston's Human Needs and Cosmic Answers) but there are moves afoot to form something a little more festive. We'll let you know what it's going to look like. Sunday 17th December (3rd Advent Sunday): Lay service at the Old Main Building, 11 am, followed by a potluck. Sunday 24th December (4th Advent Sunday/Christmas Eve): again, we are scheduled to have a study/conversation but perhaps too this will metamorphose into something different… The Christmas program is yet to be decided. We will discuss this at the steering group meeting. Any suggestions, very welcome! Finally, for those of you who like to follow the gospel readings for the week, in the Christian Community there is one reading for all four weeks of Advent (which marks the beginning of the Christian liturgical calendar): Luke 21: 25-36. On behalf of the Steering Group, -- Paul Newton (637-8057) |
